March 26, 2006 - Facing The Future With Faith

By: Rev. Steve Bass

March 26, 2006

Scripture Meditation: Genesis 50

Key points to find:

  • Grief - the high price of loving someone
  • The importance of avoiding any taint of pagan religion or practice
  • Learning to trust God's schedule
  • What a cemetery plot means to the children of Israel
  • How to accept God's forgiveness
  • What makes God cry
  • Facing the future with faith

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

  • I don’t know about you but I’m ready for some football!
    • Carolina PANTHERS football. The boys -
      • Had a great season last year- going all the way to the NFC championship game
      • With Keyshawn Johnson and the other free-agents they signed- national experts say they’ll be a Super Bowl contender again THIS year
    • So as far as I’M concerned:
      • PLEASE end this lame NCAA basketball tournament- and leave major league baseball to the steroid freaks and cheats like Barry Bonds
      • Let’s play some FOOTBALL!
  • The reason I bring all this up is because-
    • When the sermon series on Joseph began the Panthers were still playing in LAST season’s play-offs
    • Today it finally comes to a conclusion
  • We’re going to...
    • Look at the final events of Joseph’s life
    • So turn to Genesis 50- we’ll begin with the first verse
Genesis 50:1
  • For Joseph- his father’s death unleashed a torrent of emotions
    • Now Jacob was 147 years old when he died
      • He’d lived a long, LONG time
      • And he’d suffered from all the ailments of old age for many years
    • If you could EVER say a person’s death "was a blessing" THIS was the case
  • So why did Joseph react to Jacob’s death the way he did?
    • Because the death of a loved one is ALWAYS a painful thing
    • Whether it’s expected- or unexpected- a loved one’s death can hit you with the force of a hurricane
  • It’s the high price of loving someone
    • Think about it: You don’t grieve over the death of a person you don’t know
    • Grief is reserved for people who hold a special place in your heart
  • Which is why God gave you the gift of grief. Grief is a time to:
    • Express the pain of loss and separation
    • Receive the blessing of God’s peace that passes understanding
    • Be comforted by the hope of eternal life we have in Christ
    • And adjust to a world in which your loved one no longer resides
  • It’s not easy- it’s not quick- and it’s not pleasant
    • But it’s AB-SO-LUTE-LY necessary
    • Fortunately- if you’re a Christian- it’s a journey you don’t take alone
  • Psalm 23:1-6
Genesis 50:2-3
  • Joseph had his personal physicians embalm Jacob’s body
    • Typically a rich Egyptian would have used professional embalmers
    • But Joseph didn’t. The question is Why?
      • Because the professional embalmers were priests in the Egyptian religion
      • They would have prepared Jacob’s body for a pagan funeral
    • Joseph wanted no part of that
      • He didn’t want to be tainted with the stain of paganism
      • He wanted to be a witness to the one true and living God- the Creator of the Universe
  • As Christians- we can’t be tainted with the stain of pagan traditions like "New Age" religion
    • The problem is that its influence can be subtle
    • But that doesn’t make it any less dangerous
  • One example of the influence of New Age religion is today’s angel-mania
    • You can see its influence in almost any store you visit. There you’ll see-
      • Angel pins, angel figurines, angel T-shirts
      • Not to mention countless inspirational books about angels
    • Most Christians see these things and think: That must be o-k- because the Bible talks about angels
  • Which is true...BUT-
    • You’d better be sure you know what the Bible actually SAYS about angels
    • Because what the Bible says doesn’t always jibe with the teachings about angels found in New Age religion
  • In the Bible:
    • Angels were created by God to be leaders of worship in the courts of heaven
    • Angels also serve as messengers of God
      • Particularly in the Old Testament- they proclaim God’s judgment- and punishment- of sin
    • Angels had an important role in the coming of Jesus:
      • An angel told Mary that she would give birth to Jesus
      • An angel told Joseph to take Mary to be his wife; and later to flee with his family to Egypt
      • An angelic chorus announced Jesus' birth to the shepherds outside of Bethlehem
    • Finally- on occasion angels minister to God’s people- when specifically told to do so by God
  • Here’s something else to understand about angels:
    • They aren’t cuddly little cherubs- or beautiful creatures you want to see standing beside you
    • In fact-
      • Having an encounter with an angel was enough to scare the living daylights out of a person
      • Time-after-time an angel would appear and the first words out of its mouth were: Don’t be afraid
  • But here’s the most important thing you need to understand angels
    • Jesus says Christians don’t need to depend on the protection of angels
    • Because we are under the care and protection of the Holy Spirit!
  • Read what He says in John 14:15-27
  • So what’s all this got to do with avoiding the taint of pagan influence? It’s like this:
    • YOU may wear an angel pin because- for you- it symbolizes God’s loving grace and care
      • For the most part- Christians will see it
      • And understand what you mean
    • But what about that person who isn’t a Christian?
      • They may see it and conclude: I believe in God and angels too!
      • I must be going to heaven- just like she is
  • Here’s the only way to be saved
    • You must have a personal faith-relationship with Jesus the Christ
    • Anything else is a road to hell paved with dangerous assumptions and good intentions
  • That’s why Christians MUST proclaim the truth of Jesus in:
    • EVERYTHING we say- do- buy or wear
    • Nothing less than someone’s salvation may be at stake!

"And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days."

  • In ancient Egypt Pharaohs were mourned for 72 days
    • High government officials- like Joseph- would be mourned for 70 days
    • In other words: Jacob received a royal funeral
      • In death this humble desert nomad was treated like a VIP!
      • It was nothing sort of a miracle of God!
Genesis 50:4-8
  • Let’s take a little quiz:
    • Why did Jacob send his sons to Egypt?...There was a severe famine and they needed food
    • How long did the famine last?...Seven years
    • How many years of famine were left after Jacob first came to Egypt?...About five
    • How many years did Jacob live in Egypt?...Seventeen years
  • Very good. Now think about this with me:
    • The famine had ended 12 years before Jacob’s death
    • Why...
      • Hadn’t the Israelites already gone back to Canaan?
      • For that matter- why didn’t they STAY in Canaan when they went back to bury Jacob?
    • The answer is- it wasn’t God’s plan at that time
  • Sometimes God knows the time isn’t right for certain things to happen
    • It may seem perfectly logical- absolutely reason-able from your perspective
    • But if it’s not part of God’s plan for your life at that moment- it’s NOT the right time! PERIOD!
  • Understanding this takes a lot faith
    • You have to be able to look beyond the immediate circumstances
    • And trust that God is ALWAYS in control- working things out according to HIS perfect plan and purpose
  • After his experience on the Damascus Road Paul was pumped up and ready to proclaim the Good News of Christ-
    • Right then- right there
    • But God had other plans. Listen to what it says in Galatians 1:15-18
  • Look- when it comes to the things of God you have to do it HIS way on HIS schedule
    • Anything else is doomed to failure
    • Anything else is a SIN!
Genesis 50:9-13
  • In Genesis 23:12-18 the Bible goes to elaborate lengths to describe Abraham’s purchase of the burial plot at Machpelah
  • Now why would the Bible devote so many verses of Scripture to a simple business transaction?
    • Because of what it symbolized to the children of Israel!
    • Remember- God promised Abraham that some-day his descendants would posses all the land of Canaan
      • It took a LONG time for that promise to be fulfilled
      • For nearly 500 years this cemetery reminded the Israelites that they had home in Canaan
    • Because of God’s grace-
      • THEY were the rightful owners of this good- and sacred- land
      • And someday- with God’s help- they would claim it as their own!
Genesis 50:14-15
  • For 18 years Joseph had demonstrated his unwavering love and devotion to his brothers
    • But they still didn’t get it
    • They feared that everything Joseph had done was done for Jacob’s sake
      • Now that their father was out of the picture
      • They were afraid Joseph would exact his revenge on each of them
  • The problem was: Joseph’s brothers couldn’t- or wouldn’t- practice forgiveness among themselves
    • Because they couldn’t forgive one another
    • They assumed Joseph couldn’t forgive them either
  • Sometimes the hardest thing to do in the Christian life is to accept the fact that you’ve been forgiven
    • Particularly if you’re like Joseph’s brothers- and unwilling to forgive others of their sins against you
    • It’s like your brain tells you: Only a FOOL forgives- and I’m not a fool. Neither is God!
  • Folks- if you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord
    • God has forgiven ALL of your sins
      • Past
      • Present
      • And future
    • Forgiven them!
      • Removed them from the slate
      • He literally remembers them no more
  • Look- If you have trouble believing God has forgiven you; here’s want you need to do:
    • Make a conscious decision to forgive someone who’s hurt you
    • And here’s how you do it: Pray this prayer!
      • Dear Heavenly Father- I need to forgive John for something he did to me a long time ago
      • I’ve harbored this thing for WAY too long. It’s eating me up inside, and it’s keeping me from having the relationship I want to have with You.
      • So Father- give me a forgiving spirit.
      • Help me...
        • See "John" as you see me: A sinner in desperate need of grace and forgiveness.
        • Love him- and treat him as if he never hurt me.
      • And Father- as I forgive John- help me to better understand Your forgiveness of me!
Genesis 50:16-17
  • There are two explanations for why Joseph wept
    • Perhaps he realized that in spite of all the love he’d tried to show them- they still didn’t trust him
    • OR maybe it hurt him to realize his brothers had lived in a state of pain and fear all those years
  • Personally- I think Joseph was crying because both of those things were true:
    • He realized his brothers didn’t trust him
    • AND he knew they’d lived in fear and pain all those years
  • If you’ve never asked Jesus Christ to be your personal Savior and Lord- this is how God feels about YOU!
    • It hurts Him to know you aren’t willing to trust His love and mercy and grace
    • It pains Him to know you’re choosing to live in fear and pain- rather than accepting His free gift that leads to abundant- and eternal- life in Christ
  • In one of his books, Philip Yancey says the Cross proves that God is a passionate God who will go to any lengths in His relentless effort to be reconciled to you
Genesis 50:18-20
  • You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good- this is the great theme of Joseph’s life-story
    • In spite of all the terrible things that happened to him- Joseph knew God always had a plan
    • A plan to...
      • Protect and preserve his family
      • Keep ALL the promises He’d made to his forefathers
      • Create a mighty nation that would be a light to the nations
  • Here Joseph is saying: I want you to celebrate with me! God has been found faithful!
    • Everything He’d promised to do- He did
    • Let’s offer Him the praise and glory due His name!
Genesis 50:21-25
  • At the end of his life Joseph was still claiming the promises of God
    • He knew he wouldn’t live to see the children of Israel return to the Promised Land
    • But he KNEW it was going to happen- someday
  • Folks- that’s the kind of faith Christians need to have
    • Maybe...
      • Jesus will come again before this day ends
      • NONE of us will live to see that day
    • But regardless- we need to live our lives KNOWING it’s gonna happen- someday
  • I want you to turn to 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
  • Paul wrote these words because the Thessalonian Christians were confused
    • When they were told Jesus was Coming Again- they believed it would happen in their lifetimes
    • But then- some of their loved ones started to die
      • It didn’t make sense- it was too painful to contemplate
      • THEIR loved ones were going to "miss out" on heaven
  • Last Monday I helped conduct a memorial service for my cousin, Vernon Davis
    • I shared some funny stories from our childhood. They are:
      • Memories that I’ll always treasure
      • Memories that will last a life time
    • But here’s the thing:
      • Those won’t be the LAST memories I’ll share with Vernon
      • The promise of God’s Word is that some-day we’ll see one another again
    • I don’t know WHEN it’ll happen. But I know- beyond a shadow of a doubt- that it’s GONNA happen!
  • That’s the kind of faith that allowed Joseph to face the future with hope
    • A confident, sure hope
    • An unshakable hope in an Almighty God who ALWAYS has- and always WILL- keep His promises
  • ..And it’s available to ANYONE who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
    • Do you have that kind of hope in YOUR life?
    • Let us pray

March 19, 2006 - So I May Bless Them

By: Rev. Steve Bass

March 19, 2006

Scripture Meditation: Genesis 49:1-22

Key points to find:

  • What a "rally day" is and why it's so important
  • The nature of Biblical revelation
  • Why Jacob adopted Manasseh & Ephraim
  • The important role grandparents play in a child's life
  • How Jacob's attitude changed as he began to understand what God was doing in his life
  • Making faith personal
  • The lesson Jacob's blessing taught Joseph and his grandson

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

  • Death....and going to the restroom
    • Two of the most natural things in the world-
    • But nobody wants to talk about ‘em
  • I mean you photograph Tyra Banks or Heidi Klum..
    • In front of a bathroom stall or a cemetery headstone
    • Suddenly- they’re not looking so hot
  • Death....and going to the restroom
    • Two of the most natural things in the world-
    • But nobody wants to talk about ‘em
  • Especially death. But sometimes the conversation is unavoidable
  • Turn with me to Genesis chapter 48- we’ll pick things up at the first verse
Genesis 48:1
  • 17 years had past since Jacob told Joseph: Now that I’ve seen your face- I’m ready to die
    • Jacob assumed the reunion with Joseph would be the last significant event of his life
    • But he was wrong
  • The final 17 were some of the best years of Jacob’s life
    • He presided over a loving, growing family- enjoying peace, prosperity and safety
    • He earned the respect that came with being the father of the second most powerful man on Earth
    • And he was blessed and strengthened each day in his relationship with God
  • But now all that was coming to an end
    • Jacob was about to die
    • And he wanted to take care of some unfinished business
Genesis 48:2
  • Hospice nurses say that patients will often have a rally day shortly before they die
    • On the rally day they seem to have a burst of energy
    • ..And they start talking. They-
      • Talk about their lives
      • Recall special memories
      • Share words of wisdom
      • And try to say: Good-bye
  • Sadly- many of their family members..
    • Are so upset by what’s being they’re saying
    • They try to change the subject- or refuse to join the conversation
  • Let me give you some advice:
    • When you’re faced with that situation
    • Listen to what your loved one is saying
      • You not only owe it to THEM
      • You owe it to YOURSELF!
  • The last time I spoke with Brenda Helms was her rally day
    • We said our good-byes
    • And reaffirmed the central hope of our faith:
      • That someday we’ll have a day of reunion. A day filled with joy and laughter and happiness
      • It will be the FIRST day of an eternity spent in the presence of Jesus!
  • Take a look at 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Genesis 48:3-4
  • God’s promise to Jacob consisted of three things:
    • I’ll enlarge and protect your family
    • I’ll make you into a great nation
    • And I’ll give the land of Canaan to your descendants
  • ..So why doesn’t God mention eternal life or heaven?
    • Two of the most wonderful promises we know
    • And God doesn’t mention either one of them to Jacob!
  • ...Which would have made perfect sense to Jacob
    • Remember- he was a Hebrew Semite
    • And they didn’t think like we think
  • For instance, ancient Semites didn’t have a concept of "life after death"
    • For us "life after death" means that when a Christian dies-
      • You IMMEDIATELY go to be with God in heaven
      • Where you’ll enjoy eternal life with Jesus in a glorious resurrection-body
    • The ancient Israelites believed that after you died-
      • You entered in to a dark world of shadows called sheol
        • Sheol wasn’t really hell- but it wasn’t heaven either
        • It was a spiritual no-man’s land- which sounds like a pretty hopeless situation to me
      • But to people like Jacob-
        • If your name continued to live on in the memory of your descendants
        • You would have obtained a kind of immortality- you would live forever
  • What all this points out is that God revealed Himself to people over time
    • In other words- Men like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
    • Didn’t know as much about the truths of God as WE do today!
  • They lived a long time before the Bible was written!
    • What they knew about God came mostly from a few encounters with Him called theopanies
    • It took the coming of Jesus to teach us ALL that God wants us to know about life- death- love- salvation- grace- revelation- and eternal life!
  • Read what the Bible says in Hebrews 1:1-3
Genesis 48:5-7
  • At first glance- Jacob’s decision to adopt Manasseh and Ephraim makes no sense
    • As the sons of Joseph, they would receive a share of the land given to each of the tribes of Israel
    • So why did he do it?
  • Verse 7 suggests that some of it was about Rachel
    • Rachel was Jacob’s favorite wife
      • She was the one he really loved
      • Her sons- Joseph and Benjamin- were clearly Jacob’s favorites
    • But- Rachel had died at a fairly young age
      • By giving her grandchildren equal status with Jacob’s other children
      • Jacob may have been trying to honor her memory
  • But there’s something else going on here:
    • Tradition said that the oldest son always received a double portion of the family’s inheritance
    • In other words:
      • If you had four sons- your estate would be divided into five shares
      • The oldest son would receive 2 shares- the three younger sons would receive one share each
  • In Jacob’s family Reuben (his first-born son by Leah) was entitled to the double portion inheritance
    • By adopting Ephraim and Manasseh Jacob was- in effect- making Joseph the first-born son
    • It was the same kind of favoritism that caused his brothers to sell Joseph into slavery almost 50 yrs earlier
Genesis 48:8
  • This wasn’t the first time Jacob had seen his grandsons
    • They were young children when Jacob first arrived in Egypt
    • You know Jacob saw them many times over the course of the next 17 years
  • So why did he have to ask Joseph who they were?
    • Well for one thing-
      • Jacob was an old man- he was nearly blind
      • He wanted to be sure this really was Manasseh and Ephraim
    • But more importantly- this was a part of the ritual of paternal blessing
  • One part of this ritual still exists. For instance-
    • During Matthew and Rebecca’s wedding I asked: Who brings this woman to stand beside this man?
    • I knew perfectly well that-
      • Mike Helms is Rebecca’s father
      • I know Mike- and I’d just seen him escort her down the aisle
    • But I asked the question as a formal way for Mike to say: I’m here to offer my blessing on her marriage
Genesis 48:9-10
  • Pam and I are about become GRANDPARENTS!
    • Have we mentioned that before?
    • Seriously-
      • I’m looking forward to being a grandfather
      • Because I know the kind of positive impact loving grandparents can have in a child’s life
  • Several years ago a study was conducted among happy, well-adjusted Christian teenagers.
    • The kids were asked two questions: Who are...
      • The toughest people for you to fool?
      • The easiest people to for you to fool?
    • Guess what? These kids said:
      • While they found it almost impossible to fool their PARENTS
      • Their GRANDPARENTS- were another story all together!
  • What this shows is the unique ways parents and grandparents bless their kids
    • Parents bless them by setting boundaries, establishing expectations and enforcing loving discipline.
    • Grandparents bless a child by providing unlimited encouragement and completely UNCONDITIONAL love
  • Timothy is a good example of what I’m talking about
    • Being half-Greek and half-Jewish he’d been victimized by a LOT of prejudice and discrimination
    • But Timothy was a normal, well-adjusted young man. How did it happen?
      • He’d been blessed with parents and grand-parents who loved him
      • And taught him about the love of God in Christ Jesus!
  • Read what it says in 2 Timothy 1:5.
  • You want to have a happy, healthy child or grandchild
    • Love them fiercely- and fulfill your UNIQUE role in their life
    • It’ll be a blessing that will live with them for the rest of their lives
Genesis 48:11
  • When Joseph’s brothers returned from their first trip to Egypt they were bearers of bad news
    • The Prime Minister (Joseph) had falsely accused them of being spies
    • He had Simeon imprisoned- and demanded they return to Egypt with Benjamin in order to:
      • Get Simeon out of jail
      • And purchase more grain
  • For Jacob this was the final straw
    • He looks at his life and sees nothing but sorrow and misery and despair
    • In Genesis 42:36 he tells his sons: "You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!"
  • Have you ever..
    • Gone through some really tough times in your life
    • Only to look back and realize God had been doing something great in your life at that time?
  • This is what Jacob came to understand
    • For 25 years he’d experienced unyielding grief and sorrow over the loss of Joseph
    • But then God worked a miracle..
      • He not only allowed Jacob to be reunited with his long-lost son
      • For 17 more years he got to spend time with Joseph and watch his grandchildren grow up and start families of their own
    • For Jacob this was a fact of wonder and thanks-giving
  • It’s also more proof of the truth of Romans 8:28
  • Look- if you’ve been struggling with setbacks and disappointments in your life
    • Keep looking for evidences of God’s blessing and grace in your life!
    • See some thing never change. God still...
      • Loves you
      • He knows what He’s doing
      • And He’s working in all things to bring His abundant blessings in to your life
Genesis 48:12-14
  • As Joseph’s oldest son- Manasseh should have received his grandfather’s special blessing
    • But as the Bible tells us that’s not what happened
    • For some reason- Jacob put his right hand of blessing on Ephraim
  • Has a familiar ring to it- doesn’t it?
    • Remember- Jacob- the younger twin- received the right hand of blessing from HIS father Isaac
    • When- by tradition- it should have gone to Jacob’s older brother, Essau
  • There was one BIG difference between the two stories
    • Jacob had TRICKED his father into giving him the greater blessing
    • But there’s no deception here: Jacob knew EXACTLY what he was doing
Genesis 48:15-16
  • This reference to the Angel who has delivered me from all harm refers to one of the most important events in Jacob’s life
  • Turn to Genesis 32:22-28
  • Jacob had experienced a theophany- a direct, personal encounter with God. The blessing he received-
    • The assurance of God’s perpetual presence, power and love-
    • Became the unshakable foundation of Jacob’s faith
  • See before his experience at the Jabbock river..
    • Jacob’s faith had been a legacy handed down from his father and his grandfather
    • But after this encounter with God-
      • Jacob had a dramatic, PERSONAL faith
      • A faith that encouraged and empowered and sustained him for the rest of his life
  • Here in Genesis 49:16 Jacob is asking God to..
    • Do the same thing- to reveal Himself in such power and glory
    • That- in turn- Ephraim and Manasseh could have a dramatic, personal faith-relationship with God
  • I may be speaking to a child- or a young person- or an adult this morning... it may be YOU
    • Let’s say you’ve been reared in the nurture and admonition of the Lord- but you’ve never received Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord
    • What you’ve got is a hand-me-down faith- and that won’t cut it- that won’t work
      • At some point- you have to make a personal decision to receive Jesus in order to be saved
      • My prayer is that God will reveal Himself to you in such a way- that you’ll make that decision of faith before you leave here this morning!
Genesis 48:17-20
  • Joseph was displeased with Jacob’s decision to offer his greater blessing to Ephraim
    • Daddy you’ve made a mistake! Manasseh is oldest.
    • He’s supposed to receive the ‘right hand’ of blessing
  • The problem was that Joseph didn’t really get it
    • Being blessed isn’t a matter of..
      • How you were born- or where you were born- or when you were born
      • What you have- or what you haven’t- done in life
    • Being blessed is ALWAYS a gift of God’s grace
  • For reasons known only to God-
    • He decided to love you and pour out His blessings in your life
    • Even though you...
      • Haven’t got any right to it
      • Don’t deserve it in any way
  • It’s kind of like that grandchild of mine
    • I don’t know what they’ll...
      • Look like or..
      • Act like or...
      • Accomplish- or fail to accomplish- in life
      • Don’t even know if it’s gonna be boy or a girl
    • But I know one thing- I love that child already
      • Now because of WHO or WHAT they are
      • I love him or her BECAUSE they are
    • It’s MY choice- they’ve got nothing to do with it!
  • 1 John 4:9-10

    Scripture Meditation: Genesis 46:1-30

    Key points to find:

    • What a "theopany" is
    • How God’s plans and purposes can be different for different people
    • God’s time isn’t always the same as our schedules.
    • The meaning of "corporate" identity in ancient Israel
    • Why the Jews didn’t think they needed a Savior
    • The different ways people express themselves in worship

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

    • Today marks the 10th in our series of sermons on the life of Joseph
      • And we've still got two more to go (Joseph had a most eventful life)
      • But today is really the climax of the story
    • After all the twists and turns along the way- THIS is the moment Joseph had been dreaming of for nearly 30 years
      • He’s about to be reunited with his beloved father
      • Jacob is about to be reunited with his long-lost son
    • ...So why did they keep dragging it out?
      • For some reason- Joseph didn't accompany his brothers back to the Promised Land
      • And for that matter- why was Jacob so nervous about going to Egypt?
    • Let’s pick up the story with the first verse of the 46th chapter of Genesis
    Genesis 46:1
    • I've got a new word for you this morning: Theophany
      • It refers to having a direct encounter with God
      • There are a number of theopanies found through-out the Old Testament. They include:
        • Moses' encounter with God at the Burning Bush
        • Isaiah’s vision of the Lord in the year that King Uzziah died
        • And Baalam’s experience in Numbers 24
    • Typically in the Old Testament when someone experienced a theophany they'd respond by offering a sacrifice to God
      • Abraham did it
      • Isaac did it
      • Jacob had done it earlier in his life
    • But here, Jacob is offering a sacrifice without experiencing a theophany
      • At first glance you might think: "He’s learned Joseph is still alive. He’s offering a sacrifice as a way to praise God and give Him thanks
      • But in this case- that’s not what Jacob was doing
    • The fact is, Jacob was a VERY frightened man
      • As much as he wanted to see Joseph
      • He was afraid for the future of his family
    • The question is: WHY? Why would Jacob be afraid?
      • Because he knew about his family’s legacy where Egypt was concerned
      • Jacob remembered. He also knew....
        • That his grandfather Abraham:
          • Had been so afraid of being killed while in Egypt
          • He gave his wife to the Pharaoh as a sexual slave
        • God had forbidden his father Isaac from going to Egypt- under ANY circumstances (Genesis 46:2-6)
    • To Jacob the issue was clear:
      • While he desperately wanted to see Joseph
      • He would not- He could not- disobey God!
    Genesis 46:2-3
    • With these words- God has done three things:
      • First- He reassured Jacob of His presence
      • Which had the effect of calming Jacob’s fear
        • You not only have My permission to go to Egypt
        • I'm TELLING you to go to Egypt
    • Just a quick observation here:
      • God’s plans and purposes for one person
      • Aren't necessarily His plans and purposes for another person
    • For instance:
      • God’s plan for...
        • My life is to be the pastor of Sunset Road Baptist Church
        • My friend Joe Franklin is to be a missionary in China
      • That doesn't mean...
        • My calling is more important than Joe’s
        • Or Joe’s calling is more important than mine
      • It simply means God had different plans for our lives
      • And here’s the thing:
        • As long as we're faithful to God’s call
        • Someday BOTH of us will hear God say: "Well done good and faithful servant"
    • With that in mind, let’s get back to what God is doing in Genesis 46:3
      • He’s reminded Jacob of His presence
      • He’s calmed Jacob’s fear
      • And third, He renewed His promise to make Jacob a great nation
    • This was a promise God had first made to Abraham
      • Now Abraham had a total of 8 children by his wife Sarah, and several concubines
      • But only one of those 8, Isaac, would be counted as a child of the promise
    • God repeated the promise to Jacob’s father, Isaac
      • Who had only two sons
      • Only one of whom, Jacob, would be the child of the promise
    • Now God has made the same promise to Jacob: I will make you a great nation
      • Jacob had 12 children and a daughter by his two wives and concubines
      • In this case each son would be considered a child of the promise
        • In those days daughters weren't as valued as sons
        • As repugnant as that sounds- that’s the way it was
    • Anyway, if you're keeping score that’s three generations - and a grand total of 14 descendants for Abraham
      • Folks- that wouldn't even make a good sized Thanksgiving family dinner!
      • Let alone a mighty nation whose population, God had promised, would be as vast as the stars in the heavens
    • This points out an important spiritual truth: God’s plans don't always fit into our lifetimes
      • If we want God to do something, we want Him to do it NOW!
      • When we claim God’s promise to our church, we expect to see IMMEDIATE results
    • We formed the Vision Team in November 2003
      • The purpose of the team was to focus on a long-range plan for church growth
      • It took almost 14 months for the Vision Team to complete its work
    • At that point, we started trying to implement some of the goals the Team had established
      • To date it’s been 13 months, and we're still "just getting started"
      • We haven't seen a big turnaround, let alone a dramatic breakout
        • Sometimes I think: What’s taking so long?
        • Father, when are we gonna see things begin to happen?
    • At times like that, I have to remind myself of the experiences of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
      • God made them a promise- and God KEPT all of His promises
      • It just didn't play out in their lifetimes
    • BUT- they never lost their faith in God! Turn with me to Hebrews 11:1-13
    • Here’s what I think we need to do:
      • Let’s stop talking about how slow things appear to be going
      • And WELCOME God’s blessing, even if we're doing it from a distance
    Genesis 46:2-4
    • Anyone here today who’s afraid to fly?
      • Let’s say you're getting ready to take a two week trip to the Holy Land
        • you're filled with dread by the thought of getting on board the plane
        • you're having nightmares about a crash- or getting caught up in a terrorist incident
      • But then God tells you: I want you to take that trip- you don't need to be afraid. I'm gonna be with you- I promise I'll bring you back home safely
      • Would you expect to make it back home to Charlotte?
        • Of course- you would!
        • God had said it- you've believed it- and that settled it. you're coming home
    • So how come Jacob never made it back to the Promised Land?
      • In verse 4 God told him I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again
      • But, the Bible goes on to tell us Jacob died while living in Egypt
    • So, did God break His promise?
      • From our perspective the answer is Yes
        • God said I will bring you back
        • And Jacob didn't get back home
      • But that’s not how Jacob would have understood it
        • Remember- Jacob was a Jew
        • He didn't think like we think
    • See,
      • The ancient Israelites-
        • didn't think in terms of individual identity- or individual lifetimes
        • Which is what our culture values above all
      • Instead, they thought in terms of corporate (or group) identity
    • In other words: Jacob understood that-
      • God was making a promise to the future generations of his family
      • The promise meant the children of Israel would eventually return to the Promised Land
        • It’s an example of the way faith sees beyond the immediate circumstances
        • Into a future controlled and blessed by God
    • Back in the early 1970’s Sunset Road was interested in calling the Rev. James Lewis to come and serve as pastor
      • When he came for a "trial sermon" Mr. Lewis Burgess took him on a drive through the community
        • Which mostly consisted of a few houses
        • And lots of farm land
      • But God had given L Burgess a vision. He said:
        • James I want you to see houses filled with people where all this empty land is now
        • Those people are gonna need a place to worship and hear about Jesus. That’s what God has in store for Sunset Road Baptist Church.
    • God had given Lewis Burgess a vision of the future
      • He didn't live to see that vision come to pass
      • But he KNEW God would work it all out in time
    Genesis 46:5-27
    • Pretty boring, isn't it? Other than the fact I read all those RIDICULOUS names
      • Let’s face it: This kind of stuff doesn't have any relevance to our life today
      • But- this census represents ONE of the reasons the Jewish people eventually rejected Jesus as their Savior
    • See, the Jews didn't think they needed a Savior. After all, they were the Chosen People
      • As descendants of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob they had:
        • An inheritance given to them by God
        • A legitimate claim to all the promises God
      • What’s more, they believed they had the family connections that would get them into heaven
    • At one time in his life, Paul thought like that:
      • In Romans 11:1-3 he notes: I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
      • Folks, you can't get any more Jewish than that!
        • If having the right bloodlines could get you into heaven
        • Paul was a first-ballot Hall of Famer
    • But on the Road to Damascus he discovered the truth
      • When it came to the matter of salvation- his family heritage meant NOTHING!
      • In fact, it had actually caused him to become God’s enemy!
    • Turn with me to Acts 9:1-4
    • Paul had to be hit by a 2 x 4 to understand that when it comes to salvation
      • Your family heritage can help you discover the truth of God’s love
      • But salvation comes by God’s grace activated through faith in Jesus Christ- PERIOD!
    • Turn to Romans 9:1-8
    • Let me illustrate what this means:
      • When my grandbaby is born he or she will grow up:
        • With Christian parents- grandparents- and great-grandparents
        • We're gonna do everything in our power to teach him or her about Jesus and God’s love
      • But ultimately, THEY will have to make a personal decision to receive Jesus as their Savior and Lord
        • They won't be able to say: But my Poppy was a preacher, because it won't do them any good
        • The only thing that will matter is what THEY did with Jesus!
    Genesis 46:28-29
    • When Joseph revealed himself to his brothers- the Bible says...
      • He kissed all his brothers and wept over them
      • In return Benjamin: embraced (Joseph), weeping
    • But I want you to notice something about verse 29:
      • When Joseph saw his father it says he wept for a long time
      • But it doesn't say anything about Jacob crying
        • Now obviously-
          • He could've been crying his eyes out
          • In any case- I'm sure he was filled with emotion
        • But it is an interesting omission
    • The reason I bring it up is because it’s a reminder that different people express their emotions in different ways
      • For instance- when someone loses a loved one
        • Some people sob and tremble with violent emotions
        • Other people get very quiet and reflective
        • While some people never shed a tear
      • The thing is-
        • There’s no "right" way to express what you're feeling
        • Every person responds the way God created them to respond
    • The same thing is true in worship
      • A person who lifts their hands in the air while singing God’s praises
      • isn't worshiping any more- or less- than a person who’s
        • Joyfully singing along
        • Or just prayerfully listening
    • So why do some Christians get bent out of shape by the ways other people express their love for God?
      • I've heard people criticize folks who lift their hand in the air by saying:"They're not being reverent. they're being show-offs"
      • I've also heard hand-raisers:"Those other folks aren't worshiping. they're just sitting there- going through the motions"
    • Who are YOU to cast judgment on the way another person worships God?
      • See- worship is not about what YOU want or like
      • Worship is about God- and what HE wants!
        • If it’s acceptable to God- it should be acceptable to YOU
        • It can even be a source of blessing in your own life
    • For instance- I don't really like southern Gospel music- it all sounds the same to me
      • My musical tastes run to jazz and rock
      • But I've discovered inspiration while listening to southern Gospel by focusing on:
        • The worshipful spirit of the musicians
        • The joy the music brings to so many people
        • And the fact that whether I like it or not- God receives it as a genuine act of worship and praise
    • Maybe it’s time we ALL started thinking like that
    Genesis 46:30
    • It’s interesting to note that everything Jacob is recorded as saying while in Egypt dealt with the matter of his death
      • And it wasn't some sort of morbid obsession
      • It was a genuine expression of Jacob’s faith
    • A lifetime of experience had taught him that..
      • Just as God had been faithful throughout his time on Earth
      • He could trust God with his eternity
    • As Paul was preparing to die- he felt the same kind of peace:
      • Read what he says in 2 Timothy 1:12
      • I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.
    • Read 2 Timothy 4:6-8
    • Let me ask you a question: Are you ready to die?
      • If you knew you wouldn't live to see tomorrow
      • Are you sure where you'd spend eternity?
    • If you're...
      • Able to say: Yes I'm ready to die because I know Jesus as my Savior- "Praise the Lord!"
      • Not sure- if you don't know Jesus as your Savior- please- please-PLEASE receive God’s gift of love today.
    • Let us pray
