September 23, 2007 - Everyday Another Miracle: Changing Water Into Wine

Scripture Meditation: John 2:1-11

INTRODUCTION

  • Do you believe in miracles? I do.
    • I've seen too many of them to question their existence
    • To me once you accept that God exists- and that He created the Universe- you HAVE to believe in miracles
      • I mean if God can't perform a miracle
      • He isn't worthy of our praise or worship
  • Let's put it this way:
    • Why would someone think it was impossible for Jonah to have survived for three days in the belly of a fish?
    • Come on people!
      • We're talking about GOD!
      • He's the One who created Jonah AND the fish in the first place!
  • Of course miracles happen
    • God the Father caused them to happen in the Old Testament
    • And God's only begotten Son- Jesus the Christ- performed them in the New Testament
  • Which brings us to the sermon series we're beginning this morning
    • I'm calling it Everyday Another Miracle
    • During these messages we're going to examine many of the miracles Jesus performed while here on Earth
      • We're not only going to think about what happened
      • We're going to discover what it means- and how it fits into Jesus' mission and ministry
  • This morning we're going to begin with the first of Jesus' miracles-
    • Changing water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee
    • Please read John 2:1-2

THE MIRACLE: WHAT HAPPENED

  • For people in Bible times weddings were monumentally important things
    • According to ancient tradition the ceremony itself would always be held on a Wednesday
    • The reception would begin immediately after the ceremony- and it would go on for days
      • Two or three if the family was poor
      • And up to a week if the family was wealthy

    John 2:3

  • I've got to admit that what I'm about to say is pure speculation-
    • But I think Jesus' mother Mary was related to the bride's family
    • I mean- it would explain why she was so concerned about the wine running out
  • Here's the thing: Having no wine for your wedding guests
    • Would've been more than a social faux pas
    • In those days a bride's family could be sued for running out of food and drink before the party ended
  • It was all part of a social contract that existed between the bride, her family and the wedding guests.
    • Essentially it went something like this:
      • Each guest was expected to bring an appropriate (meaning expensive) wedding gift
      • In turn- the bride and her family would provide all the food and drink their guests demanded
    • Now this is where it gets strange:
      • A couple had the right to sue a guest who failed to bring an appropriately expensive gift
      • Which meant a guest could sue the bride's family if they didn't get enough to eat and drink in return
  • That's why I think Mary was related to the bride's family
    • She knew that if the wine were gone
    • Her family could have been sued into bankruptcy

    John 2:4

  • That sounds pretty disrespectful- don't you think? Dear woman, why do you involve me?
    • But that's not what's happening here
      • In the original Greek dear woman is a term of intimacy and endearment
      • It's kind of like calling someone 'sweetheart'
    • As for Jesus' question- why do you involve me?
      • It's not that harsh sounding in the Greek
      • Instead it's more like asking: Are you sure this is any of our business?
  • What's important here is the contrast between the concerns of Jesus and His mother
    • Mary was concerned about the lack of wine
    • While Jesus' focus was already on the reason He had come to Earth
  • Notice what He says: My time has not yet come
    • Throughout the Gospels whenever Jesus talks about my time or the hour
    • He's talking about the moment He would die on the Cross for the sin of the world
  • Please read Matthew 26:36-46
  • When Jesus told Mary my time has not yet come He was saying:
    • Mother- I've always been obedient to you. I've always tried to do what you've asked Me to do
    • But above all- I've got to obey my Father in heaven. I must submit to His plan for My life- no matter what it costs Me!
  • Now read verse 5
  • You know, sometimes it hard to know what to think about Mary
    • Some Christians exalt her to the point where she's virtually an object of worship
    • While others look at her as little more than a uterus God used to bring Jesus into the world
  • The Bible gives us another way to think about Mary: She was the witness
    • She was the only one who saw- and experienced- the whole thing
    • She was the one who:
      • Heard Gabriel announce that she would give birth to the Savior
      • Gave Jesus birth- who watched Him grow- and supported Him throughout His earthly ministry
      • Stood at the foot of the Cross and watched Jesus die- and then saw Him in His resurrected glory
  • More than anyone else Mary knew who Jesus was:
    • 'Yes'- he was her Son
    • But more importantly-
      • She knew Jesus was the only begotten Son of God- the Christ- the Savior of the world
      • And she knew that God's Son could perform a miracle
  • That's why she confidently told the servants: "Do whatever he tells you."
  • John 2:6

  • These stone jars were at the reception for a purpose
    • Old Testament law required Jews to wash their hands before eating
    • Since modern plumbing wasn't around in those days- the stone jars were set out as wash basins

    John 2:7

  • Now remember-
    • There were six of these jars holding between 20-30 gallons of water each
    • We're talking about nearly 150 gallons of water

    John 2:8

  • You know- there's something missing here
    • In the 7th verse.../ In the 8th verse...
      • Jesus instructs the servants to put water into the jars
      • He says draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet
    • Do you see what's missing?
      • There's no explanation of what Jesus did to change the water into wine!
      • Which is very unusual
  • Typically when the Bible describes one of Jesus' miracles it tells us He did something first:
    • In some situations He prayed
    • Other times He took some kind of concrete action
  • Please read Mark 7:31-35
  • Here's the bottom line-
    • We don't know what Jesus did in John 2 to change the water into wine
    • All the Bible tells us is that the water became wine
  • LOld TestamentS of wine
    • About 150 gallons worth
    • That would fill about 4800 4 oz. glasses
      • Talk about taking a party to the next level
      • You can get a lot of people smashed with 150 gallons of wine

    John 2:8-9

  • The master of the banquet was responsible for keeping the party going
    • He was like a master of ceremonies
    • Or a toastmaster
  • Anyway- let me paraphrase what he told the groom: "Most people bring out the best-tasting wine first- then when everyone's liquored-up- and nobody cares- they bring out the cheap stuff. But you've saved the best for last."
  • A wine-snob might have expressed it more eloquently
    • But there's no getting around what happened
    • Jesus had taken well water- and turned it into the finest vintage of wine you could imagine

THE MIRACLE: WHAT IT MEANS

  • It was a miracle- but what does it mean?
    • See- in the New Testament miracles don't just happen
    • Miracles always happen for a reason- they always reveal a deeper spiritual truth
  • Well read what John says in verse 11
  • By witnessing this miracle
    • Jesus' disciples concluded that He WAS the Messiah- the Christ- the Son of the Living God
    • The question is:
      • What was it about this miracle that caused them to reach this conclusion?
      • Well...to answer that question you have to go back to the Old Testament
  • In the Old Testament wine- and the consumption of wine- symbolizes the blessings and spiritual joys that comes from the Lord
  • In Genesis 27:27-28, Isaac blesses Jacob
  • Now- let's jump forward about a thousand years to the time the Jewish people were living in exile in the nation of Babylon.
    • These were people who are lost everything.
    • About the only thing that kept them going was the dream of returning to their homes in the Holy Land
  • During that time God sustained the hopes of His people. Through the prophets He told them
    • You'll only be in captivity for a short time.
    • Then I'll restore you and bring you back home. Once again I will be your God- and you will be my people
  • In these prophecies the harvest of new wine became a symbol of hope- a symbol of God's promise
  • At this point you might be thinking:
    • OK- I understand that wine was a symbol of hope and spiritual joy for the Jews.
    • But I still don't see why changing water into wine made the disciples believe that Jesus was the Messiah
  • Here's where we come to the most important prophecy of all- Isaiah 25:1; 6-9
  • What we just read is a prophecy concerning the coming of the Messiah- the Christ- the Son of the living God
    • And notice what it says: One of the things the Messiah will do is host a glorious feast that flows with wine
    • Not cheap wine- but the finest wine that can be imagined!
  • Now do you get it? Do you see what this miracle means?
    • By changing water into wine Jesus had fulfilled one of the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah
    • No wonder the disciples concluded that He was the Christ- the Son of the Living God- the Savior of the world!
  • But there's one other thing I want you to notice about this miracle: It proves that Jesus is in the transformation business
    • In Cana He proved He could take ordinary water and transform it into a dark, rich, full-flavored wine
    • But more importantly- the Bible says Jesus can take a filthy sinner and transform them into a pure and righteous child of God!
  • Isaiah 1:18: says: 'Come now, let us reason together,' says the LORD. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.'

CONCLUDING ILLUSTRATION

  • You probably don't know who Vincent Damon Furnier is-
    • But you may know his stage name- Alice Cooper
    • In the 1970's and 80's The Alice Cooper Group was one of the biggest names in rock
  • Essentially Vince Furnier invented what came to be known as 'shock rock'
    • The songs- and especially the stage shows- were designed to be loud, raunchy and over-the-top
    • In those days a typical Alice Cooper concert-
      • Featured lots of blood, gore, electric chairs, guillotines and Satanic imagery
      • Each show ended with a scene of Cooper being executed for witchcraft
  • As Alice Cooper's act took off- his life began to spiral out of the control
    • By the early 80's he and his bandmates were spending $32,000 a year- just on beer
    • As alcoholism took control of his life- his wife threatened to end their marriage
  • As it turns out- both Cooper and his wife had a strong Christian heritage
    • Cooper's father and grandfather had been ministers
    • His wife's father was a Southern Baptist preacher
  • Anyway- with no place else to turn Alice Cooper and his wife Sheryl started attending church
    • Eventually- Alice Cooper made a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
    • In his own words:
      • At first I accepted Jesus because the preacher made me afraid I was going to hell
      • Only later did I begin to understand God's love and acceptance
  • The idea of someone like Alice Cooper becoming a Christian has been difficult for some people to grasp
    • His old fans wonder what it means
    • And some 'fundamentalist' Christians have questioned the sincerity of his faith
  • Today Alice Cooper and his wife are active members of the Camelback Bible Church in Scottsdale, Arizona
    • They're deeply involved in Sunday School and Bible study
    • And- as a fellow member of Camelback writes:
I got to meet him for the first time this past Sunday. I went to work in the church's nursery Sunday night while they were having a prayer service. Anyway, much to my surprise, he and his wife, Sheryl, were also working in the nursery. So, I had the privilege of walking in on him having a tea party with a little 3 year old (named) Anna.
    Source- The Furnier Freakshow website
  • From the alcoholic godfather of shock rock to a man humbly serving the Lord by ministering in the church nursery...on a Sunday night!
    • Now THAT'S a testimony to the transforming power of Jesus Christ
    • ...And they call changing water into wine a miracle
  • Let us pray

September 16, 2007 - The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit- Part 2

Scripture Meditation:1 Corinthians 12

INTRODUCTION

  • I want you to take a long look at me
    • What you see before you is proof that God has a wicked sense of humor
    • Or at least a whimsical sense of irony
  • As exhibit 'A'- I give you my love for music
    • I'd love to be able to play the piano-
      • Or a saxophone
      • Or a guitar
      • Shoot- I'd settle for being able to play a kazoo
    • But- that's not going to happen
      • All the musical talent in my family's gene pool fell on Matthew and Stephanie
      • The only thing I can play is...a stereo system!
  • As exhibit 'B'- I give you my love for golf
    • I love playing golf
    • The problem is golf doesn't love me
      • From time-to-time I can string a couple of pars together
      • But I KNOW there's always a quadruple bogey out there- waiting to jump up and bite me!
  • That's why I say God has a sense of humor
    • I love music- but God didn't give me the gift of music
    • I love golf- but God didn't give me the hand-eye coordination it takes to play the game well
  • But that's OK. See- I know that I'm a uniquely gifted person
    • The Holy Spirit has given me gift and talents I can use for the glory of God
    • And if you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord- He's given YOU gifts and talents as well!
  • That's why this morning we're going to conclude this two-part sermon series by thinking about the gift of the Holy Spirit

JESUS IS LORD

  • Let's begin by reading 1 Corinthians 12. We'll start by looking at verses 1-3
  • Let's stop right there:
    • To say that Jesus is Lord is more than just a religious affirmation
    • The proclamation that Jesus is your Lord means that you've relinquished control of your life to Him
      • That He is your absolute Master- and you are His willing servant
      • To put it another: Saying Jesus is Lord means you're completely, totally, 100% sold out for Jesus
  • Now- to borrow Dr. Phil's expression: Let's get real
    • The proclamation that Jesus is Lord is a step of faith many Christians have never taken
      • Sure- they've asked Jesus to be their Savior
      • They have their fire insurance safely in hand
    • But that's about as far as it goes
      • They're not ready to give up control of their life
      • They've never been able to pray this prayer: Jesus- from now on You have all of me there is to have! My life is in Your hands! I want You to use me in any way You see fit!
    • Folks- if you've never done this I urge you to make that decision today. Because if you do...
      • You'll begin to experience the joyful, abundant life Jesus wants to give you
      • And you'll be able to be used by God for His glory- and you'll be blessed in the process
  • Getting back to verse 3. God's Word says it's impossible to take Jesus as your Lord without the help of the Holy Spirit
    • On your own the old sin nature we talked about last week will assert itself every time!
    • In fact- the ONLY way to experience this kind of spiritual victory is to depend on the power and presence of the Holy Spirit!
  • 1 John 4:1-4

THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT IS GIVEN FOR THE COMMON GOOD

  • Let's read on- read verses 4-7
  • This verse should settle- once and for all- the question of whether you have a gift of the Holy Spirit!
    • Notice what it says: to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given
      • Now each one means every person who knows Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord
      • Manifestation means the realization of the Holy Spirit's power
    • In other words:
      • EVERY Christian has been given a special realization of the Holy Spirit's power and presence in their life
      • This manifestation is expressed as a particular gift of the Holy Spirit
  • OK- let's take a timeout here
    • People frequently ask me if there's a difference between having a spiritual gift and having a certain talent
    • Technically speaking the answer is 'Yes'- but practically speaking the answer is 'No'
  • By definition-
    • A spiritual gift is a result of being a born-again child of God
    • A talent is a natural ability resulting from physical birth
  • That's the technical side of it. Here's the practical part:
    • Ultimately all spiritual gifts and natural talents are gifts from God
    • And each can be used for God's glory in the church!
  • How does the old saying go?
    • What you are is God's gift to you
    • What you become is your gift to God
  • With that in mind- let get back to 1 Corinthians 12
    • Notice WHY you received talents and spiritual gifts: ...to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good
    • In other words:
      • Your spiritual gift is a BLESSING from God
      • But you didn't receive it for YOUR benefit- it was given to you for the benefit of OTHERS!
  • Let me try to illustrate what this means.
    • I love Diana Krall- got every CD she's ever recorded
      • Diana Krall is the greatest female jazz singer in the world today- she also plays a killer piano- she's that talented
      • As a professional entertainer she's made millions of dollars off the talent she's been given
    • Then you take someone like George Beverly Shea
      • As a young man Shea was offered a recording contract with CBS Records® that would have made him a rich man
      • But he turned it down in order to enter full time Christian ministry
        • Rather than exploiting his gifts for his own glory
        • He used his gift for God's glory
  • Listen to what the Bible says in Colossians 3:7: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him...
    • Folks- if you bring that kind of attitude to the table
    • You WILL use your spiritual gift for the benefit of others- and the glory of God!

TO ONE THERE IS GIVEN

  • Let's read on- read verses 8-10
  • Now I want you to understand what we've got here:
    • This is a list of SOME of the gifts of the Holy Spirit
    • But- this is not the ONLY list of the spiritual gifts given in the New Testament.
  • Please read Romans 12:3-8
  • Now, let's read Ephesians 4:11-13
  • I want you to notice a few things about these passages of Scripture
    • First of all-
      • This isn't an all-inclusive list of the spiritual gifts
      • This is a sampling of SOME of the gifts and talents the Holy Spirit gives to individual believers
    • Second- Even though every Christian will have at least one gift or talent- some Christians receive multiple gifts of the Spirit
      • Notice what it says in Romans 12:6: We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.
      • In other words: The Holy Spirit will give you all the gifts and talents you need to accomplish the work God has called you to do!
    • Finally- I want you to notice the NATURE of these gifts
      • They're not designed for people who want to go sit on a mountaintop and stare at the veins on the back of their hand!
      • Above all- these gifts are practical. They enable the church to fulfill its MISSION and MINISTRY in the world!
  • Illustration: Aesop's Fable Of The Crow
    • In one of Aesop's fable the story is told about an old crow who was flying South for the winter
      • He hadn't had anything to drink in a long time- and he was VERY thirsty
      • When suddenly he noticed a jar of water sitting on the ground
    • With joy- he swooped down and prepared to drink to his heart's content
      • There was only one problem
      • His beak wouldn't QUITE reach the water in the bottom of the jar
    • The crow tried everything- and nothing worked. Until he got an idea...
      • He started picking up pebbles that were lying on the ground- and dropping them- one by one- into the bottom of the jar.
      • The more pebbles he dropped in the jar- the higher the water in the jar began to rise- until finally he was able to reach the water- and quench his thirst!
  • Folks- that's a pretty good illustration of the way God has chosen to work in this world
      • Every Christian has been given a gift and talent by the Holy Spirit- it may express itself...
        • By teaching a Sunday school class-
        • Or serving on a church committee-
        • Or being a chaperone for a youth retreat-
        • Or visiting a shut-in-
        • Or cooking a delicious meal
        • Or putting a roof on the Children's Building
        • Or sharing the plan of salvation with a friend at work
    • Individually- these things might not seem all that important
      • But as the pebbles begin to accumulate in the bottom of the jar- and the water starts to rise
      • God is able to build His kingdom and bring all of His Plans to fruition!
  • Now let's take another time out
    • I'm sure some of you may be thinking: Steve- I understand that God has given me gifts and talents that I can use for His glory.
    • My problem is- I don't know what my gift or talent is
  • Folks- THAT is a valid point
    • Most Christians don't know what their gifts and talents are
    • Which makes it difficult- if not impossible- to know how to use your gifts and talents for God's glory
  • The good news is there are plenty of tools and instruments out there that will help you discover what your gifts and talents are
    • Come by the Office anytime and I'll be glad to share them with you
    • In fact- we're going to be using one of these instruments in a few of our Sunday School classes over the next month or so
  • The point is:
    • There are easy ways to discover the particular gifts and talents God has given you
    • All it takes is prayer, a little time and a desire to be used for God's glory

THE BODY IS A UNIT

  • With all this in mind- let's read on- read verses 12-20
  • Don't miss what the Bible is saying here: You are a vital part of the body of Christ!
    • You may not be a pastor- or a Sunday School teacher- or a deacon- or a member of the choir
    • But without YOU...
      • The body of Christ is severely handicapped
      • The work God has given Sunset Road Baptist Church can not POSSIBLY be accomplished!
  • This is the point Paul is making in verses 21-26
  • Illustration: Visual Illustration
    • I want you to hold up your hand like this- with your thumb pressed against your palm
    • Now using these four fingers only- I want you to try and pick up a hymn book out of the pew rack
      • (Wait a few seconds)
      • It's hard- isn't it?
    • Can you imagine having to go through your life without your thumb?
      • I mean it's just a three inch body part
      • But without it you'd be severely handicapped
  • Folks, that's the way it is in the body of Christ
    • When just one member of the church is content to drift along in spiritual mediocrity-
    • The WHOLE body of Christ is affected!
  • In putting this sermon together I struggled with what I'm about to say next
    • In fact I tried to avoid having to say it
    • But God didn't give me any choice
  • I believe the biggest problem we have in our church today is a commitment problem
    • We've got folks who...
      • Desperately need a booster shot of commitment
      • Believe their responsibility to the Lord begins and ends with the Sunday morning worship service
    • Now don't get me wrong:
      • There are great things going on around here
      • And I rejoice in what God is doing in our midst
  • But the problem is some of us are TOO content- TOO self-satisfied with the way things are now
    • Too many folks are mired in spiritual mediocrity
    • They seem to be perfectly happy to sit back and watch the parade pass them by!
  • Folks- I don't know about you-
    • But I don't want to go through the motions.
    • I'm not willing to accept mediocrity...
      • In my personal faith-walk with Christ
      • In the body of Christ that worships together at Sunset Road Baptist Church
  • Maybe I'm selfish- maybe I'm not being realistic- but I want God to open up heaven's gates- and send down blessings that will...
    • Change my life
    • And fan into flame the fires of revival in this church!

CONCLUSION

  • I want you to Please read John 14:11-13
  • Folks- think about what Jesus is saying here!
    • Through the in-dwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit
    • The body of Christ- the church- will do even greater things than Jesus did when He was on Earth!
  • You see, when Jesus was on the Earth He accepted the physical limitations of time and space
    • In other words: If He was in Jerusalem- He couldn't be in the Galilee
    • He could minister to the people He came in contact with- but He couldn't minister to someone in say- Rome
  • But the church- the empowered people of God- has been scattered throughout the entire world!
    • So that whether we're in Charlotte, North Carolina- or Pembrooke, Georgia- or an international missions site- or anyplace God takes us
    • We can be a part of the work God is doing in His world today!
  • All we need is for...
    • People to get SERIOUS about the things of God
    • People to stand up and say: Here I am Lord- use me!
    • People who are willing to take the spiritual gift the Holy Spirit has given them- and use it for the glory of God
  • Let us pray

September 9, 2007 - The Gifts Of The Spirit- Part 1

Scripture Meditation: Galatians 5:22-26

INTRODUCTION

  • Well folks- it's that time of year
    • And I'm not talking about the beginning of the football season
    • I'm talking THAT time of year
      • Early September
      • When the process of selecting a leadership team for the new church year begins
  • Even now:
    • The Nominating committee is recruiting people to serve on our committees, organizations and Purpose teams
    • And- as we noted earlier- the deacon nomination process began this morning
  • Typically churches approach this process by trying to fill slots
    • Any idea who we can put on the Evangelism committee?
    • Didn't Sarah do a good job on the Kitchen committee? Maybe she'd do it.
  • Folks- that's a TERRIBLE way to pick church leaders
    • Rather than trying to fill slots
    • The Bible says we should look for the people:
      • Who've been gifted by the Holy Spirit
      • And possess a burning passion for the mission and ministry of the church

TRANSITION

  • Which is why I want to take today and next Sunday to focus on the gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Ordinarily sermons on the spiritual gifts tend to focus on spectacular things...
    • Like-
      • Speaking in tongues- gifts of healing
      • Miracles- prophecy
      • And inspired preaching and teaching
    • But that's not what we're going to do. Above all- these sermons are designed to be practical
  • For instance- next Sunday we're going to talk about...
    • The gifts- and talents- the Holy Spirit has given to every born-again child of God
    • And how these gifts are to be used for God's glory in the church
  • This morning- we're going to focus on the fruits of the Holy Spirit. See- the thing is:
    • If these fruits are not present in your life
    • You.../Because you...
      • Can't effectively serve God and minister to others
      • Aren't the person God created you to be
  • So with all this in mind- let's read Galatians 5:22-25

THE ACTS OF THE SINFUL NATURE

  • Now to fully understand this passage of Scripture you have to read it in the context of what came before
  • So let's look at Galatians 5:19-21
  • The key to understanding this passage of Scripture is the word 'acts'- the acts of the sinful nature
    • In this case 'acts' carries the idea of an automatic- reflexive- involuntary behavior
    • In other words:
      • You don't plan the acts of the sinful nature- you probably don't even want them in your life
      • These things happen because of who you are
  • Here's where you need to remember what the Bible says about human nature
    • Essentially God's Word says we're not the sweet, innocent, good-hearted people we like to think we are
    • The Bible says that by nature we are wicked, rebellious creatures who are compelled to sin against God
  • Romans 3:10-17
  • Now getting back to Galatians 5-
    • The sins listed here aren't intended to be all inclusive
    • Instead they represent a life lived under the control of the old sin nature
  • Look at what it says:
    • The first three sins- sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery- are representative of all forms of sexual sin
    • The next two sins- idolatry and witchcraft- represent religious sin
      • Trying to find God
      • Apart from a relationship with Jesus Christ
    • Hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy- are all characteristic of sins against other human beings
    • And finally- drunkenness, orgies, and the like- reflect ungodly, pagan practices
  • All-in-all- it's a pretty sickening list
    • But that's the kind of life you were doomed to live before you became a Christian
    • And the kind of life you'll continue to live unless you give the Holy Spirit control of your life
  • Which brings us back to verses 22-25 and the fruits of the Holy Spirit

HOW SPIRITUAL FRUIT IS PRODUCED

  • OK- let's see if you're smarter than a fifth grader
    • Hold up an apple
      • Where does this come from?
      • And please don't say 'the grocery store'
    • The correct answer is- an apple tree
  • Here's the point:
    • This apple didn't spontaneously happen on its own
    • It was produced by its attachment to something else- in this case an apple tree
  • The same principle is at work in the spirit life. Spiritual fruit-
    • Is produced by your attachment to SOMEONE else
    • And that someone else is Jesus the Christ
  • Please read John 15:4-5
  • Let me explain what Jesus is saying here
    • This piece of fruit grew on a branch of an apple tree
    • But the branch had to be attached to the trunk of the tree
      • See if you cut off a branch- it may live a few days- it may even sprout a few leaves
      • But apart from the trunk it will NEVER produce a piece of fruit
  • In the spiritual life this principle can be expressed very simply:
    • A Christian who does not stay in close, intimate fellowship with Jesus
    • Will NEVER be able to produce supernatural fruit in their life
  • At this point you may be thinking: 'Wait a minute Steve!'
    • I thought we were talking about the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
    • But it sounds like you've stopped talking about the Holy Spirit- and started talking about Jesus!
  • Well- you're right. But don't get confused- we're talking about the same thing:
    • To have a faith-relationship with Jesus means the Holy Spirit automatically dwells within you
    • In turn- the Holy Spirit is the One who will lead you- and guide you- into genuine Christ-like living
  • Please read what Jesus says in John 14:16-17 and John 14:26
  • Here's the bottom line:
    • If you know Jesus as your Savior the Holy Spirit lives in you
    • Through the Holy Spirit- Jesus wants to produce an abundant crop of spiritual fruit in your life

THE FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • Well let's talk about this spiritual fruit
  • The first fruit the Spirit wants to create in you is LOVE
    • The Greek word is agape
    • Agape is used in the New Testament to describe the unique, sacrificial, all-encompassing love that:
      • Defines the character of God
      • And must be characteristic of His children
  • The perfect definition of agape is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
  • Now I want you to notice something:
    • The fact that agape-love is listed as a fruit of the Holy Spirit means it doesn't come naturally to human beings
    • In other words:
      • Apart from Christ it's impossible for human beings to practice this kind of love
      • Agape-love has to produced in you as a result of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit
  • You can think of it like this:
    • God's perfect love flows down and fills you up
    • So that you can share its overflow with others
  • The second fruit of the Spirit is JOY
    • The Greek word is chara
    • Which is somewhat similar to the word for happiness- with one difference
  • Happiness is.../ But joy is...
    • Always conditioned on external things
      • For instance- if the Panthers win today
      • It will make me happy
    • Based on something inside- something that isn't shaken by circumstance
      • And that something is created by the Holy Spirit
      • Who reminds you that God loves you- that Jesus died to save you- and that as a Christian you have the absolute assurance of eternal life
  • Romans 8:35-39
  • The third fruit of the Spirit is PEACE
    • Peace is a translation of the Hebrew word shalom
    • In Jewish thought.../ In Christian terms...
      • Shalom is a gift God gives to mankind
      • God's peace is a result of Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
  • Again- remember what the Bible says about sin
    • Ultimately sin is about rebellion against God
    • When you sin you declare war on God
      • God- I reject Your right to rule my life.
      • From now on I'm going to go my own way- and do my own thing- and be my own god.
  • Folks- that's a war you can't win
    • You may think you're hurting God- but really you're destroying yourself
    • Romans 6:23 puts it this way: 'For the wages of sin is death'
  • The question is: What did God do about your decision to go to war against Him?
    • He created the terms of peace by sending Jesus to die on the Cross for you
    • 2 Corinthians 5:19 puts it this way: 'God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them.'
  • Do you begin to see how all this fits together?
    • While you were busy waging war against God
    • He created a peace treaty with you through Christ Jesus
  • This shalom-peace God established can do awesome things in your life. Having this fruit of the Spirit leads to-
    • Peace with God
    • Peace with yourself- as in peace of mind
    • And peace with others who know Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord
  • The fourth fruit the Spirit wants to produce in you is PATIENCE
    • The Greek word is makrothumia
    • Makrothumia literally means 'long-suffering'
  • This is the spiritual fruit that turns:
    • A short-fused, prone-to-anger kind of person
    • Into a loving, slow-to-anger child of God
  • Patience is the fruit that lets you-
    • Cope with adversity
    • Deal with the annoying people in your life
    • And face whatever happens knowing that God is always with you
  • Psalm 37:28 says: 'For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever...'
  • The fifth fruit of the Spirit is KINDNESS
    • The Greek word is chrestotes
    • Chrestotes.../It's...
      • Refers to the loving-kindness God demonstrates toward each of us
      • The quality that causes the Bible to declare that 'God is good'
  • So get the picture here:
    • The Holy Spirit wants to create IN you
    • The same kind of loving-kindness God has demonstrated TOWARDS you
  • Which bring us to the next fruit of the Holy Spirit- GOODNESS
    • The Greek word is agathosune
    • Which is a difficult word to define
      • Essentially goodness is what happens when kindness jumps into action
      • It's a spirit of generosity and self-sacrifice that causes people to do extraordinary things for others
  • Over the years I've had the opportunity to witness numerous acts of Christian goodness
    • People will hear of a need- come by my office- put money in my hand and say: Steve- give them this money- because they need it
    • But then they'll swear me to secrecy: Don't ever let them know where it came from!
  • Folks- I don't violate confidences
    • But I don't mind telling you where it comes from
    • It comes from a spiritual fruit called 'goodness'
  • The seventh fruit of the Spirit is FAITHFULNESS
    • The Greek word is pistis
    • Pistis literally means 'trustworthiness'
  • It's the same word Jesus uses to describe the character of a faithful servant in Luke 16:10-12
  • The point here is that the Holy Spirit wants to mold you into the kind of person:
    • People can trust
    • And more importantly- GOD can trust to minister to others in His name
  • The eighth fruit of the Spirit is GENTLENESS
    • The Greek word is prautes
    • It describes a person who is always:
      • Angry at the right time
      • And never angry at the wrong time
  • I know that sounds weird- so let me explain
    • According to the Bible anger- in and of itself- is not a bad thing
    • In fact- some things that happen in this world should make you angry
  • For instance when Moses.../ When Jesus...
    • Came down from the mountain and saw the Israelites worshipping the Golden Idol- He got angry
    • Entered the Temple and saw the merchants and moneychangers plying their trade- He got angry
  • Folks- a person who exhibits the fruit of gentleness
    • Is so Spirit-filled that they only get angry with things that anger God. Things like sin-
      • And unrighteousness-
      • And immorality-
      • And injustice
    • They don't get angry just because things don't happen to go their way
  • Which brings us to the final fruit the Spirit wants to produce in you- SELF-CONTROL
    • The Greek word is enkrateia
    • It refers to the power that gives a Christian victory over sinful desires and temptation
  • Enkrateia is what lets you...
    • Live in the world without being of the world
    • Say 'No' to what is wrong- and 'Yes' to what is right
  • Unfortunately- translating enkrateia as 'self-control' is somewhat misleading
    • See- there's no way you can't have a victory over sin and temptation through SELF control
    • You can only claim a victory over sin and temptation through SPIRIT control! PERIOD!

CONCLUSION

Galatians 5:22-23

  • I want you to turn to a loved one sitting close to you and ask: 'Would you enjoy living with me more if these fruits of the Spirit were in my life?'
    • I'll guarantee you the answer is going to be 'Yes'
    • See- the Holy Spirit wants to produce a harvest of spiritual fruit that will bless EVERYONE you come in contact with
  • Tony Evans puts it this way: 'The Holy Spirit wants to produce fruit in your life so that your family and friends will be able to take a bite out of your life and say: 'Oh man! That was GOOD!''
  • So how do you do it? How can the Holy Spirit produce a harvest of spiritual fruit in your life
    • First- and foremost- you've got to have an intimate love-relationship with Jesus
    • Then you've got to let the Holy Spirit do His work in your life
    • And finally- you've got to want it so bad:
      • You'll say 'No' to self
      • And say 'Yes' to the Lord
  • How bad do you want it? Let us pray

September 2, 2007 - Letters To My Son: I Am Now Ready

Scripture Meditation: 2 Timothy 4

INTRODUCTION

  • Scientifically speaking-
    • The summer of 2007
      • Began on the 21st day of June
      • And will not until Sunday, September the 23rd at 5:51 AM
    • But you know what? Most of us could care less what astronomical science says.
  • And far as most rational human beings are concerned-
    • Winter runs from the 1st of December through the end of February
    • Spring begins on the 1st of March- and ends in May
    • Fall begins on the 1st of September- and ends on the 30th day of November
  • And as for summer it more or less...
    • Begins on Memorial Day- and ends on Labor Day
    • Am I right? Of course I am!
  • The fact that tomorrow is Labor Day means this is a good time to end our summer-long sermon series on the books of 1 & 2 Timothy
    • I hope these messages have been a blessing to you
    • That you've learned a few things along the way
    • And been able to apply God's truth to your daily walk of faith with the Lord
  • Having said that- let's wrap up this series this morning by focusing on the last chapter of 2 Timothy

IN VIEW OF HIS APPEARING

  • Please read 2 Timothy 4:1
  • One of the most important things the Bible tells us about God is that He is the Judge of the Universe
  • But here in 2 Timothy 4 it says JESUS will judge the living and the dead. This statements PROVES that Jesus-
    • Was more than just a man
    • Was the Christ
      • The Son of the Living God
      • The Second Person of the Holy Trinity
      • That He was God- in human flesh
  • Now you might be thinking: Steve- I've been in church a long time. I've heard this hundreds of times. Tell me something I don't already know!
  • Well here's why this truth needs to be repeated over-and-over-and-over again:
    • If Jesus was just another human being then His death on the Cross has no power to save you from your sin
    • But the fact is Jesus was fully God- and fully man
      • Which means His death on the Cross is all-sufficient
      • It's all you need- in order to be saved!
  • Please read how 2 Corinthians 5:14-19 puts it
  • By the way: One other thing about Jesus being the One who will judge the living and the dead
    • Because the Judge of the Universe is also the One who died to save you!
    • You can be absolutely certain that you will NEVER be separated from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord
      • Your salvation is 100% secure
      • Because it's safe in the hands of Jesus!
  • The point Paul is making is that everything Timothy does in ministry must be done in the context of Jesus' Second Coming
    • The fact that this world is passing away- that Jesus is Coming Again
    • Should be all the motivation Timothy needs to faithfully complete the mission and ministry he's been given
  • Which is the same mission and ministry EVERY born-again child of God has been given
    • In Acts 1:8 Jesus said: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
    • As Christians our job is to be Jesus' witnesses- to share Jesus' love-
      • In our Jerusalem (Charlotte)-
      • Our Judea (North Carolina)-
      • Our Samaria (The United States)-
      • And to the ends of the Earth
    • Until Jesus Comes Again!

PREACH THE WORD

  • Let's read on. Verse 2
  • I'm fifty years old
    • And with the exception:
      • Of a few summers in high school and college
      • I've NEVER had a regular 8-to-5 job governed by a traditional job description
    • Granted-
      • You can find a 'Pastor's Job Description' in the Church Manual
      • But it's so general- so non-specific- it's almost meaningless
    • The fact is my job description is found here in 2 Timothy 4. Read what it says.
  • Preach the Word
    • The Greek word translated as 'preach' means 'to proclaim'
    • In other words: My job as your pastor is to boldly proclaim the truth of God's Word
  • Notice what I said:
    • I must proclaim God's Word- not my word
    • See you can't build a life based on the wit and wisdom of Steve Bass
    • But you CAN build a life filled with joy and purpose on the foundation of God's holy, infallible, inerrant Word
    • As your pastor my responsibility is to rightly divide- or correctly interpret- the Bible so you'll be able to live a life that is pleasing to God
  • Preach the Word...
    • be prepared in season and out of season
      • I have to prayerfully study and prepare myself
      • Before I step into this pulpit and preach the truth of God
    • correct
      • The Greek word is elenxon
      • Which means to 'convict' or 'reprove'
    • rebuke
      • The Greek word is epitimeson-
      • 2 Which means to 'censure' or 'admonish'
    • and encourage
      • The word here is parakaleson-
      • It means to 'comfort' or 'exhort'
    • -- with great patience
      • The Greek word is makrothymia-
      • Which carries the meaning of 'loving understanding'
    • and careful instruction
      • The word is didache-
      • It means 'teaching' or 'revealed truth'
  • Folks- if you want to know if you're hearing genuine, Biblical preaching ask these questions:
    • Did the message convict you of those areas of your life that are not pleasing to God?
    • Did the sermon encourage you to submit your will to God's Will?
    • And did the preacher patiently and carefully teach you the eternal truths of God's Word?
  • If you can answer 'Yes' to all those questions
    • You've heard Spirit-filled, God-given preaching
    • Otherwise you're just enduring meaningless drive!

FOR THE TIME WILL COME

  • Please read 2 Timothy 4:3-4
  • You know-
    • What we just read has always been true
      • It was true in Paul's day
      • And it's true today
    • People aren't interested in the truth of God- they want to hear things that tickle their fancy
  • That's one of the reasons why there's so much 'Second Coming' fever and fanaticism out there
    • Every week you hear about-
      • Another 'Prophecy Conference' being held at some church
      • Or a new book that contains some outlandish theory about the 'hidden codes' of Revelation
    • The truth is people have always...
      • Been more interested in wild speculation and hopeless complexity
      • Than the simple, straight-forward truth of God's Word
  • Listen to me- this Book is not some riddle wrapped in an enigma surrounded by a mystery
    • God didn't give us His Word to create confusion and doubt and controversy
    • God gave us the Bible to reveal and explain and make known His Will and His Ways
  • That's why I practice the 'When In Doubt' theory of Biblical interpretation. It goes like this...
    • When in doubt assume the Bible says what it means and means what it says
    • I guarantee you:
      • If you follow that theory
      • You'll rarely go wrong!

DISCHARGE ALL THE DUTIES OF YOUR MINISTRY

2 Timothy 4:5
  • With these verses- Paul has begun his final words of instruction- and for the most part- they restate things he's already said in 1 & 2 Timothy
    • Keep you wits about you.
      • Remain alert.
      • Practice self-discipline
    • Expect to face persecution and hardship because of your faith and witness
    • But above all- don't stop doing what you've been called to do:
      • Be an evangelist. Tell people about Jesus
      • Fulfill your God-given responsibilities as a pastor
  • You know- the word evangelist comes from a Greek word meaning 'Good News'
    • In other words: As an evangelist- Timothy must proclaim the Good News about Jesus!
    • As long as he keeps doing that God will continue to bless his ministry
  • The same thing is true in the church today
    • Our job is to proclaim the Good News about Jesus!
    • As long as we're doing that- God will pour out His blessings on our efforts
  • Unfortunately- one of the failures of evangelical Christianity is that we've forgotten to be in the Good News business
    • Walk into a typical evangelical church and you'll hear preaching that's more about...
      • Legalistic rules and regulations than the pure truth of God's grace and mercy
      • Condemnation and judgment rather than the wonderful love and grace of Jesus Christ
    • The problem is- we've fallen into the trap of...
      • Trying to change the world through the ballot box
      • When the Bible makes it clear that the hope of the world is Jesus Christ!
  • Folks- it's high time we get back to doing the work of an evangelist. PERIOD!

THERE IS IN STORE FOR ME...

2 Timothy 4:6
  • The idea of being poured out like a drink offering is an Old Testament analogy
    • According to the book of Deuteronomy
      • Once the lamb of sacrifice had been slaughtered- a bottle of new wine would be poured on its carcass
      • The lamb's carcass- soaked in wine- would then be roasted on the altar as an offering to God
    • Over the centuries this drink offering came to be understood as a symbol of a life totally committed to God
  • The interesting thing is that in Philippians 2:17 Paul uses this same symbolic language
  • I want you to notice the two-letter difference between Philippians 2:17 and 2 Timothy 4:6, It's the word 'If'
    • In Philippians Paul says: IF I am being poured out like a drink offering
      • In other words: Paul's ready to sacrifice his life for Christ's glory
      • But he sees it as something that will happen in the distant future
    • In 2 Timothy 4 he says: I am ALREADY being poured out like a drink offering,
      • Paul knew he was about to be executed for his faithful service to Christ
      • And he's OK with this
  • He's not only OK with this-
    • He is at peace with himself
    • And absolutely confident about the future
    2 Timothy 4:7
  • Here's another case of Paul using athletic metaphors in his letters
    • He says he's fought the good fight
      • The Greek word he uses is agonizomai
      • It means to 'compete in athletic competition'
    • He goes on to say he has finished the race
      • The word for race is dromon
      • It means to run a race course
    • Finally he says: I have kept the faith
      • The idea is to play by the rules
      • To do the things you're supposed to do
  • To paraphrase: I am satisfied at having competed well in the contest of a life totally committed to Christ. 'I have run the racecourse the Lord had set before me. I have kept the rules and not been disqualified by the Savior'
    • Folks- I hope that at the end of my life I'm able to have the same peace of mind Paul had
    • I hope that I'll be able to say: I have faithfully fulfilled the responsibilities God has given me!
    2 Timothy 4:8
  • Something interesting about the expression crown of righteousness
    • The Greek word for 'crown' is stephanos
    • Which refers to the laurel wreath that was given to the winner of the Olympic marathon
  • So notice what Paul's saying:
    • The Lord- the judge of the contest- is ready to reward me with a laurel wreath at the end of my race
    • It's not a crown symbolizing royalty. It's a crown symbolizing victory through faithfulness
  • And here's the thing: It's a crown available to EVERY born-again child of God
    • Look- I'm not going to receive extra credit for being a missionary evangelist.
    • This same reward will be given to everyone who does what God has called him or her to do
  • What does all this mean?
    • If you are faithful in the things God has called you to do in this life
    • You'll receive the same 'crown of righteousness' Paul and Peter and Timothy and Billy Graham will receive
  • A crown which will be presented with these words:
  • 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' (Matthew 25:21)

GET MARK AND BRING HIM WITH YOU

  • Now to be honest- the last few verses of 2 Timothy 4 deal mostly with personal matters
    • Remember- this is a private letter we're reading
    • But there are a couple of interesting things I want to point out
    2 Timothy 4:9-11
  • If you ever doubt that God is a God of second chances-
    • You need to bookmark 2 Timothy 4:11
    • And read it anytime Satan tries to drag you down with feelings of guilt, shame and discouragement
  • Please read Acts 15:36-40
  • Nobody knows why John Mark left Paul and Barnabus in Pamphylia
    • Some folks.../Others...
      • Have suggested he got scared- especially when they began to experience persecution and opposition
      • Believe he may have been offended by Paul's determination to share Christ with the Gentiles
    • In any event- Mark abandoned Paul during an especially difficult time in his life
  • Here in Acts 15 Paul is ready to begin another missionary journey
    • Barnabus- who is Mark's cousin- says: 'Let's give the guy another chance'
    • Paul thinks that's a bad idea: 'He left us once- who's to say he won't do it again'
  • The Bible doesn't sugarcoat what happened next
    • Paul and Barnabus had such a heated disagreement over Mark they finally decided they could no longer work with one another
    • It was a tragic end to a great missionary partnership
  • By the time of 2 Timothy 4 many years have gone by
    • And Paul recognizes that Mark has changed
      • Notice what he tells Timothy: 'Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry'
      • The man who had abandoned Paul in Pamphylia had become a helpful partner in ministry
    • There was only one way Paul could have known about the changes in Mark's life:
      • At some point God lead Paul to give Mark a second chance
      • Paul could be a stubborn guy. Only the Lord could have convinced him to give Mark another chance
  • Folks- I don't care how bad you've failed- or how far you've fallen
    • God believes in giving you a second chance- and a third chance- and as many chances as you need after that
    • All you have to do is come to Him with a humble heart- ask Him to forgive you- and He WILL give you another chance
  • 1 John 1:8-9

THE LORD...WILL BRING ME SAFELY TO HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM

2 Timothy 4:12-18
  • It's interesting- and not coincidental- that Paul ends his letter to Timothy on a note of hope
    • Despite the persecution- the opposition- the intense suffering- and the sword of death that was hanging over him
    • Paul was filled with hope
      • He KNEW that Jesus was His Savior
      • He KNEW God would be found faithful
      • He KNEW that the moment his life on Earth ended- he would immediately go to be with the Lord in heaven
  • Folks- do you have that kind of quiet confidence in Christ?
    • Are you absolutely certain that Jesus is your Savior?
    • Are you convinced- beyond a shadow of a doubt- that God will be faithful?
    • Are you filled with the hope of knowing that the moment your life on Earth ends- you will go to be with the Lord
  • If your answer is...
    • 'Yes'- Offer praise and thanksgiving to God for this wonderful gift
    • 'No' or 'I'm not sure'- would you like to leave here today with that sense of hope and joy?
  • Let us pray
